An electronic strike, rim release or latch release are used on swing doors. They fit into the frame of a door acting as a keep for the lock. When access is required, voltage is either removed or applied and the release pivots allowing the lock to freely move away opening the door. After the door is opened past the latch, the latch returns to its standard position and re-locks when power is removed or applied, depending upon the strike's configuration.
