Thanksgiving Deal Rare Old Map Of Kent, 1809 By Faden & Ordnance Survey - Canterbury, Maidstone, Bromley, Tunbridge, Margate, Lewisham Best Choice [MJHcB3aq]
Behold! The finest old map of Kent ever created - and also, incidentally, the first ever Ordnance Survey map. First published in 1801, this map was actually created by William Faden, one of the finest mapmakers of the late 18th and early 19th century. The version here is from 1809, with a few updates.
This map was originally 180cm (70 inches, 6ft) wide. It has a monumental amount of detail. Every town, village, hill, river, road, canal... they're all here.
Because there's so much detail, the smallest size you can buy is 24x18 inches (60x45cm) - but please be aware that the writing will be very small at this size. I encourage you to buy at least the 36x24 inch (90x60cm) version. The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch map. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
I can actually print this one at sizes up to 8 metres wide - 320 inches or 26ft. At this size you may want me to print it on wallpaper - or there are other options as well. Do get in touch if you're after a particularly large version of this map for your office, pub, hotel, etc.
If you're after a slightly smaller scale map of Kent, the John Speed map is lovely - check it out here in black and white or handcoloured.
Some of the towns, villages and places clearly visible in this old map include: Canterbury, Dover, Rye, Tunbridge, Maidstone, Sevenoaks, Hever, Orpington, Edenbridge, Ashford, Folkestone, Isle of Sheppey, Whitstable, Bromley, Chislehurst, Herne Bay, Broadstairs, Deal, Gravesend, Rochester, Margate and more.
In the northwest you can see London, which was a smaller city than it is today - you can see that much of Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley are still fields.
The map also shows a chunk of Essex north of the Thames, including Southend, Canvey Island, Thurrock, Dagenham, etc.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown!
This would make a wonderful gift for someone from Kent or who has Kent in their heart.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
