This is undoubtedly the finest old map of South America that has ever been made. Put together by English mapmaker William Faden, this massively detailed map was originally 100 inches (250cm) tall.
Luckily, through the Unique Maps process, this map is now available sizes that will fit in normal sized homes and offices!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches (31x46cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm). I would recommend going for at least 24x36 inches (60x90cm) or larger if you have the space for it as it looks even better when printed large.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36 inch (60x90cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of the same area by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli in 1690.
Please note that at 12x18 and the 24x18 inches the writing is very small. The map is still very attractive, but you will struggle to read the smallest labels.
The map shows South America before its colonies and countries started to become independent republics from Spain later in the 1800s. Many of the geopolitical borders that you see on this map would be dramatically shifted over the next few decades. Take a look at how much land 'Chilli' and 'New Chilli' occupy! And instead of Colombia, there's New Grenada...
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain town or village is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from South America or who perhaps is interested in the history of the Spanish colonisation of the Americas.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
