Published in 1967, Intrepid 7 featured the Charles Bukowski poem, Men’s Crapper.

During the same year, the poem was published in Evergreen Review (Vol. 11, No. 50), which Bukowski considered a breakthrough of sorts because the editorial had rejected his previous submissions. Refer to Bukowski scholar Abel Debritto’s excellent essay on the subject:

The poem would also appear 40 years later in Storm for the Living and the Dead (2017).

Bukowski would appear in seven issues of Intrepid between 1966 and 1972.

Edited by Allen De Loach in New York (issues 1-5) and then Buffalo (issues 6-41), Intrepid (1964-1980) published a large number of poets directly and indirectly associated with the New American Poetry, and especially Beat writers. Contributors included a long list of such influential figures as Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Philip Whalen, William Burroughs, Diane di Prima, Charles Bukowski, Ted Berrigan, Gary Snyder, Ted Enslin, and Charles Olson.

A consistent issue with Intrepid was the length of the staples in the binding, due to the thick, textured covers. Sometimes the staples barely make it through the back cover, other times the staples don’t.

This copy is in Near Fine condition, with the bottom staple not making it through the back cover. Light general wear to the covers. Future owner should handle with care.

Overall, a beautiful, vibrant copy of this important poetry journal.
