Stanhopes (Stanho-scopes) were invented by René Dagron in 1857. They were invented as a way of viewing microphotographs without the need of a microscope. In 1862, Dagron displayed the devices at the Great Exhibition in London, where he was awarded an "Honourable Mention" presented by to Queen Victoria.
The tiny carved pig hangs from a silver watch chain, which could be used as a watch chain or wrapped around the wrist as a bracelet. The large hook on the end can hook into any section of the chain with ease. These weird and wonderful charms are rare to find.
