BlackBox by Turbosmart is a dedicated Electronic Wastegate Controller which can be used in cooperation with a range of Factory, Aftermarket and Motorsport ECU’s. The BlackBox provides protection from the current demands and translation of basic as well as more advanced boost control strategies into a gate position and can be used on single, or twin electronic wastegate systems for the ultimate in boost control.
The BlackBox is a Dual Channel, High current Capable H-Bridge Driver for use with the Turbosmart range of Electronic External Wastegates, including the StraightGate50 as well as our Electronic poppet style gates including; CompGate40, HyperGate45, ProGate50 and PowerGate60 electronic Wastegates.
The BlackBox is capable of multiple strategies and will accept PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) inputs as used for traditional boost control solenoids, 0-5v position target, CAN position target and CAN bus override for more advanced ECU’s where control strategy can be developed natively. The Blackbox provides for auto-calibration of Electronic External Wastegates via a full sweep and includes over temp safety features using the temperature sensor inputs.
The BlackBox is pre configured with the flow vs. lift calibration data of all Electronic Actuatuated Wastegates from Turbosmart for simple setup and accurate boost control. Settings can be adjusted via a simple USB connection and PC based application and unlimited control strategies can be implemented with the CAN based override system where your strategy is limited only by your ECU’s capability.

What is the first rule of boost control? 

 Ensure you have an over-boost cut-out. This is a safety feature built into basically all factory, aftermarket & programmable ECU’s. You can never be too careful. Make sure it is set at a sensible & reasonable limit. Increasing the boost will put more load on your engine and there are other tune related factors you must consider. If in any doubt, speak with a professional tuner / calibrator.

What is Current Capacity of the BlackBox?

25Amps per channel (x2 Channels). That is more than enough to control the Turbosmart eWG and StraightGate Series of External Wastegates for any single, or twin Wastegate system. The BlackBox provides current demand isolation protecting your ECU, no matter which strategy or mode you use.

Will the Blackbox work with my factory ECU?

If your factory ECU is programmable and you have complete control over a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) output which is usually used for a boost control solenoid, then yes. 

It will however require custom calibration as there are less dynamic forces with an electronic system so the map will look very different to how it usually would.

Does the BlackBox transmit Data via Can?

Yes. The CAN stream is available (Refer Data sheet / instructions) for connected channels and includes wastegate position, wastegate temperature, current draw for up to 2 Units. 

Can I Override the default software & calibration?

Yes. By selecting CAN override you effectively switch modes and the BlackBox becomes a High-Current 2 Channel Driver for your ECU. This disables the default tables and settings required for PWM or CAN target, but gives you unlimited control of the gates, direct from your ECU.
