Description

The territorial expansion of the Russian Federation into Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine (first, in 2014 as a hybrid war and then in 2022 as a large-scale conventional war) brought forth a significant shift in the political landscape of the Eurasian region. Russian actions disrupted the systemic peace that was established after the collapse of the Soviet Union, which Russian President Putin referred to as the “biggest geopolitical catastrophe” of the 20th century. Rather than threats to human security coming from non-state and transnational factors like weak and failed states, resource conflicts, internal strife, and terrorism, the primary concern for the US foreign policy has become state-level aggression from Russia. As a result, the United States, as a leading member of NATO and the largest contributor to European security, needs to adjust its strategic goals for the region’s countries and rethink how to achieve them. The way to do this is to go back to the basics of the ethical approaches to foreign policy, in general, as enshrined in its various doctrines.

With the new threats to European security increasing their pace (mainly from Russia), there is an expedited need for comprehensive coverage of the new geopolitical realities.
