Some pages unopened. Very Good light brown cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. Covers have slight darkening, minimal wear to extremities, and a small bump to upper tip of fore-edge on front, else clean and intact, binding tight, sharp tips. Pages have light age toning, a dampstain on front free endpaper, and some offsetting affecting two pages of the Index from a laid-in newspaper article. Black-and-white plates, including three folding maps, included. One piece of ephemera laid in: a blue and white 1993 folding road map showing "Calaveras and Tuolumne County Communities." Fascinating printed collection of diary entries and letters kept by John Doble, a California miner. Through his writings, Doble vividly evokes what life was like in California during the 1850s and 1860s as a gold miner. He describes his experiences as a miner in places such as Mokelumne Hill, Jackson, Volcano, and San Francisco.
