The story is about Claude Wheeler, the son of a Nebraskan farmer who is struggling to find his purpose in life. He finds that purpose with the onset of World War I. Upon the United States' entry into the war, Wheeler readily enlists. A significance influence on Cather's novel was the death of her cousin, Grosvenor P. Cather, who was killed in 1918 while serving in France.
