Near Fine folio, black paper over boards with vellum back strip, gilt to spine, soiling to back strip, gilt to top edge. Condition maroon slipcase with cream title sticker to spine in black lettering, major sunning to all sides, soiling (perhaps light-colored paint). Original monthly newsletter between front pastedown and front endpaper dated September 1960, number 322. 165 pp. Twelve full-page sepia drawings with tissue overlay by Ben-Zion, a Russian-born American artist and member of “The Ten” Expressionist group. Translated, edited, and with an introduction by Judah Goldin, a rabbi, author, and professor of Jewish literature and history. A collection of maxims from the synagogue fathers, spanning from the Men of the Great Assembly to the descendants of Rabbi Judah the Prince, reflecting their values, concerns, and reflections on God-fearing and civilized conduct. 

The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies.
