Titled ‘Tongee Bazaar’, this original encaustic by Oregon artist Eunice Brandt is whimsically painted and full of life, much like the artist herself, and the southeast Asian destinations she visited. This is framed under plexi and mounted on silk matting.
about the artist:
My mother was an incredible artist and an amazing person,' Brandt’s daughter said, 'She was absolutely fearless in her art and in life.'
Eunice Brandt painted for as long as her daughter knew her. She traveled around the world, but had a particular affinity for the south Asian countries of Nepal and India. 'Because she was very artistic, mom wandered a lot and she was always looking for something new to paint.' She was an activist through her art and developed a special batik technique which she passed on to her daughter - a tempera-and-wax technique that uses Nepalese paper handmade from daphne plants.'This kind of paper is used for all the holy writings in Hindu scripture,' said Brandt. Using a tjanting tool, she dotted one of her nature paintings with beeswax and paraffin before crinkling it, coating it with India ink and ironing it out between sheets of newsprint…the wax preserves the paper in its natural state’. Suffering from bipolar disorder, Eunice passed away in 1982.
