Period: c. 1900 - 1920s; this piece bridges the aesthetic gap between ornate Edwardian design (as seen in the ring’s intricate filigree) and the rational right angles of Art Deco (as seen in the ring’s upper geometric patterning)—Note: people often use the word “filigree” to describe ornate metalwork, but the term is usually used incorrectly. The word derives from “thread” and “grain” and has the specific meaning of small bits of wire, usually twisted into ornate designs.
