A carved marble sculpture, conjoined busts of a Native American woman, buffalo and bear, raised on a beveled wooden base. Signed and dated correctly this original metamorphic sculpture encompasses the facets of a sculptural totem in marble . In native American folklore the bear represents strength courage and leadership, The bison represents abundance, stability and prosperity and the elk woman represents dignity,nobility and integrity. This exquisite piece was carved in the late 1980's by a master sculptor Kathy Whitman Elk woman in superb detail.

Kathy Whitman-Elk Woman is an award-winning artist, in various media, based in Phoenix, Arizona. She combines artistic flair with technical skill to create art that is full of love and spiritual feeling, her work reflects both an artistic vision as well as the personality of her subjects.

Kathy Whitman-Elk Woman, comes from the Mandan-Hidatsa-Arikara Nation, on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota along the Missouri River. She is also of Norwegian descent from her mother. It was during a Sun Dance Ceremony in 1977, in South Dakota that she received her Indian name, Elk Woman. The ceremony transformed her life and guided her on a stronger path. That experience helped her to reconnect with her traditional spiritual ways and guided her toward a more positive direction. Knowledgeable buyers from around the world, collect her work. She has received many prestigious awards and participated in numerous exhibitions. She is also a member of the Indigenous Sculptor Society.

CONDITION

This marble sculpture is in good condition with some small signs of use commensurate with age , there may be a repair to the bears nose as it appears slightly different in color at the tip- please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description.
