A good antique cast bronze sculpture an Egyptian Revival bust "The Queen of Babylon", by the 19th century French sculptor Paul Auguste Gagne, circa 1875.
This rare & unusual bronze bust was cast by the Lost Wax method (Cire Perdue), Paul Auguste Gagne was a sculptor active in Paris in the to late 19th century, stylistically his work compares to that of Emile Eugene Hebert (1828-1893) who also produced such Egyptian Revival sculptures. Gagne exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1865 onward.
The bust depicts Nitocris, the 6th century B.C.E queen of Babylon & the daughter of the famed King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, she is depicted wearing an intricate head dress with a serpent's head to the front. The bronze is signed to the rear "P. Gagne" and is engraved to the left shoulder "Nitocris La Reine de Babylone" (The Queen of Babylon).
The bronze is in excellent condition and is ready to grace your space.
