Overview:
In the aftermath of World War One United States railroads learned there were financial advantages to standardization of the freight car fleet. The newly formed Association of American Railroads was tasked with developing standard freight car designs for North American railroads. Out of this work came the AAR Standard 50 ton 2-Bay Offset Hopper. Atlas’ version of this 2-Bay Offset, open top hopper with flat ends is modeled after this AAR Standard design built from the mid 1930’s though the 1960’s to transport coal.
