Rare vintage 5x7-inch black and white portrait as failing music hall performer Archie Rice in John Osborne's "The Entertainer" (1957), the role he recreated in a 1960 film adaptation, which earned him an Academy Award nomination, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen in the late 1950s. This is the only signed image of the star in that important role we have ever encountered. In good condition, with minor handling dings. Classically-trained English stage and screen star Laurence Olivier was nominated for Academy Awards for his performances in Wuthering Heights (1939), Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940), Henry V (1945), Richard III (1955), Othello (1965), Sleuth (1972), The Boys from Brazil (1978), and took home the trophy for Hamlet (1948).  He was also memorable in As You Like It (1936), Pride and Prejudice (1940), The Beggar's Opera (1953), Spartacus (1960), The Entertainer (1960), Uncle Vanya (1965), The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Marathon Man (1976), the Sherlock Holmes film The Seven-Per-Cent Solution (1976), Jesus of Nazareth (1977), the horror flick Dracula (1979), and Clash of the Titans (1981).
