A fourteen carat yellow gold signet ring. This is a classically designed signet ring. The ring is made of solid fourteen carat yellow, and is marked '18' on the inside right of the shank. The gold shank is not fussy with a graduated band that tapers into the back with a simple oval rubbed edge mounting to the hard stone. The hand engraved intaglio crest is set in sardonyx, which has a pale white appearance from the surface, until it is engraved into, revealing its jet black layer beneath. The crest is a classic shield with helmet with plumes of feathers atop. Beautifully hand carved and free of damage.
Sardonyx has captivated admirers for over 4,000 years, tracing its roots back to the illustrious Second Dynasty of Egypt. In ancient Greece and Rome, warriors took to the battlefield adorned with sardonyx talismans, intricately carved with depictions of legendary heroes and deities like Hercules and Mars. They held a strong belief that these stones channeled the bravery of such figures, bestowing upon them courage, triumph, and protection in the heat of combat. The Romans also favored sardonyx for seals and signet rings, as its smooth surface allowed for clean impressions on wax, ensuring that official documents bore a mark of authenticity without the messiness of adhesion. During the Renaissance, this striking stone became synonymous with eloquence. Orators and public speakers embraced it, believing it enhanced clarity of thought and communication, a charming accessory for those in the art of persuasion. Unlike the rarefied gemstones coveted solely by royal elites, sardonyx has long been cherished by both the privileged and the everyday collector. Its beauty and relative affordability make it a splendid addition to any gem collection, allowing anyone to revel in its allure
The ring is American made, dating circa 1890's and is a ring size 9.5. It can be sized if desired. Contact us upon purchase.
