Collector's Item A Pair Of 19th Century Juban Sleeve Linings: Bright Yellow Cotton Online Exclusive [hD5VBPGU]
ca. mid to late nineteenth century
each: 41 1/2" x 14 1/2", 105.5 cm x 37 cm
Shown here are two, separate sleeve linings which were taken from a padded juban, or an under kimono that is composed of pieces of silk and cotton fabrics. The two pieces have been configured as can be seen on the accompanying photographs; the dimensions listed above represent just one of the two pieces, each of which is the same size.
The base cloth is cotton which has been dyed in a natural yellow dyestuff, presumably turmeric. The asagi or pale blue cloth is katazome dyed tsumugi or hand spun silk on top of which is stitched a dark colored silk fragment also dyed in indigo using the katazome method and which shows a complex pattern of cherry blossoms and hemp leaves.
Just lovely, and recommended.
