This lovely, completely sashiko stitched cotton textile is hand sewn from about two layers of repurposed cloth. The top layer is composed of eleven separate pieces. The back layer is constructed from four separate pieces which seem to have been culled from an old, cotton kimono.
The top and bottom long edges are finished by turning over and stitching down the cloth.
Because of its rectangular dimension, this cloth could have been a sleeping mat or it could have been placed under a futon. Or, as well, it could have been used for seating during cold winter months.
The face of the cloth shows some of the same recycled kimono cotton that comprises the entirety of the back. Mixed in with these kimono cottons on the face is a good amount of wide striped cotton which most likely was repurposed from old bedding cloth. Note the stitched repair and the wear to the face of this sashiko stitched textile.
A beautiful old hand made cloth from old Japan, this sashiko stitched coverlet is in very good, worn condition and still has a great deal of life left in it.
