Direct Price A Handsome Length Of 19th Century Handwoven Plaid: Patched Risk-free Trial [OExn3ZTC]
ca. mid to late nineteenth century
60" x 12 3/4", 152.25 cm x 32.5 cm
This length of subtle yet beautiful checked cloth has the air of a 19th century hand woven, Japanese plaid cotton. The base color is indigo and the contrasting, warmer and lighter color may have been dyed using benibana or safflower.
The cloth is designed of two layers of checks offset from one another, a narrower one and a wider one.
The wider of the two lines forms a kind of basket weave effect at its point of intersection, which is sometimes called sankuzushi and is emblematic of mid 19th century cottons.
This length shows two hand applied patches, a small hole, and faint, black, coin-sized stain which is illustrated in the accompanying detail photos.
Very handsome.
