late nineteenth, early twentieth century
58" x 13 1/2", 147.5 cm x 34 cm
This is a very good length of hand woven, beautifully designed kasuri cotton that was no doubt woven from hand spun yarns. It wonderfully evokes the hand work that is so rich and distinctive from Meiji era Japan.
The indigo dye is dark, almost black in tone. The pattern is well covers, an often seen traditional Japanese design motif that, quite interestingly, does not convey any particular symbolic meaning.
Each of the well covers is slightly different from the other and the length is very slightly bowed.
This is a really very nice length of old kasuri cotton and as said above, one that conjures up images of life in late nineteenth century Japan.
