Verified A Length Of Pieced Cotton: Tortoiseshell Katazome - Priority Shipping [aKsxoOg6]
early twentieth century
54" x 13", 137 cm x 33 cm
This length of katazome dyed cotton is made from two pieces that have been hand stitched together up the center of the piece.
The katazome pattern is designed in such a way as to mimic kasuri or ikat weaving.
The pattern is that of hexagons which, in the world of Japanese design is a shorthand form of depicting tortoiseshell, a motif that carries with it the significance of conferring wishes for a long life.
The color is a strange, dull greyish color and there is overall light fading to the length. There is also overall surface abrasion from wear.
A lovely length showing a highly abstracted Japanese design motif beautifully rendered in a classic dyeing technique.
