This is a graphically appealing length of indigo dyed cotton kasuri that shows a repeat pattern of roundels and Chinese characters called kanji.
Within the roundels we see stylized wood sorrel, and this is presumably represents a family crest. The kanji, which is curiously shown both in forward and reverse reads Shimazu, a family name.
The kasuri images are woven using weft yarns and the design on this length is quite regular.
Please note: the cotton is pitted with small holes overall--some are shown in the accompanying detail photos--as well as some light, overall surface abrasion.
A lovely length of indigo dyed cotton kasuri.
