It's human nature to take a good thing too far and early Texas oil men were fully human. Too many wells at Spindletop led to a rapid decline in production.
 
The nadir was 1924 when the full year's production would have been just a good week in 1902 or a good month in 1904.

But smart folks began to place bets that more oil could be found at the flanks of the dome in the deeper Marginulina sands. The Yount-Lee Oil Company proved those speculators right in 1925 when a flank well was brought in at 5400 feet.

Spindletop was back and the twenties were roaring at Beaumont. By 1927 the second boom had far eclipsed the first.

Here's the return to Spindletop. Back to work. Back to prosperity.
