The population was around 35,000. But that's misleading, because the City of Houston only occupied the central area of this map.

Most of what you see is rapid development outside the city limits. Sound familiar?

The proposed extension of the city limits (shown on the map) would push the boundaries of Houston all the way to the edge of The Heights (it's first suburb) and take in the area that is now Rice University and the zoo.
