Created as a tribute to the Winnebago Indian Nation, two sculptural figures were to stand in large circular shallow basins of water at the entrance to the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Nakoma Country Club, Madison Wisconsin. Neither the statues nor the clubhouse were built during Wright's lifetime.
Nakoma - (Female Sculpture): Rounded, curvilinear sculpture captures the serenity of an Indian Mother, with daughter by her side, and papoose on her back carrying pots used in the daily ritual of caring for her family. Originally, the sculpture was intended to stand 16 feet high in limestone. Water spilling from the bowl was to be the source of water for the basin.
Nakomis - (Male Sculpture): The sharper edges and geometric lines of the taller sculpture represent the proud warrior Father, aiming the arrow towards the sun as he teaches the techniques, and use of the bow. Originally the sculpture was to stand 18 feet tall, likewise in limestone.
In 1929 Wright had the Nakoma and Nakomis figures produced at a smaller scale in terra cotta. This edition is very rare. These current reproductions were created using the statues now located at Taliesin, Wright's summer home and studio in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The sculptures are true to the details of those statues.
