An exceptional mid-Victorian forget-me-not flower ring!
Legend has it that in 15th century Germany, a young knight was picking these small blue flowers for his lover on a river bank, when he slipped and fell into the river. As he was being carried away, his voice was heard yelling out to the woman "Forget me not!" as he tossed the bouquet to his lover.
The forget-me-not flower motif was popularly used in love tokens and mourning jewelry during the Victorian period. This gorgeous forget-me-not ring dates to the mid-Victorian period (circa 1845-1865). It features two turquoise cabochons and three half pearls in crimped collet setting with a ruby accent in the middle of the flower. The underside of the ring has a hidden glass compartment holding a lock of hair. The ring is unmarked, but acid tests for 18k gold.
The ring is in very good condition; however, there is a small bit of loss to the outermost nacre of the pearls and the ruby is slightly offset, yet secure (only visible under magnification). Due to the lock of hair on the reverse of the piece, the ring should not be exposed to moisture or water.
It is currently a size 7, but it can be re-sized free of charge.
Materials: Pearl, Gold.
