The sumo wrestler yokozuna Shiranui Mitsuemon (1825-1879) is depicted in his keshômawashi (ornamental apron). He came from Higo (present Kumamoto Prefecture) and his grand father was active as an Ôzeki, the second-highest rank of sumo. Mitsuemon started in the local wrestling group, then moved to Osaka, and eventually then to Edo. He was supported by the Kumamoto clan. In1863 he became the 11th yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo, and remained active until 1869. He was also famous for his dohyôiri, the ceremonial entrance to the ring. Then he retired from Edo and moved to Osaka again. Underneath this drawing we can see the face and title of another wrestler.
