The German BR 04 express locomotive was a short-lived but significant step in the evolution of German high-speed steam locomotives. It was essentially an experimental offshoot of the better-known BR 03, designed to test the advantages of higher boiler pressure and improved performance.

Background and Development

In the early 1930s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German National Railway) was investing heavily in modern express locomotives. The standard series of the time included the BR 01 (for mainlines with strong track infrastructure) and the lighter BR 03 (for lines with lower axle load limits).

As part of its ongoing development of express steam power, the Reichsbahn commissioned two experimental locomotives from BMAG (formerly Borsig) and Krupp to explore the use of higher-pressure boilers to increase efficiency and speed. These became known as the BR 04 class.
