On this day at Rockaway Beach, the wind was so strong it felt like a gale. People’s picnic lunches were flying across the sand, and tents were lifted off the ground. I was there with Grace, trying to enjoy the day, but it wasn’t exactly beach weather. Still, the chaotic energy of the scene made for an interesting subject to draw.

Rockaway Beach is a beautiful place, though urban buildings surround the area, giving the beach an interesting mix of nature and city. I had to hold my paper tightly to keep it from blowing away, but despite the challenges, the movement and energy of the wind became part of the drawing itself.
