Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice looking redware honey jar of typical design and in good condition. The piece would display nicely in any collection of antique redware.
Condition: The jar is in very good condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has no cracks, repairs, or hairlines. It is solid and intact and displays a nice shape. It does have general crazing to the glaze throughout, which is very difficult to see because of the surface coloration. The piece has a few small chips to the edge of the flattened rim and a couple smaller chips at the edge of the flanged base. It also has a few small flakes to the glaze throughout the exterior of the piece. The piece also has a few scratches and minor rubbing signs throughout the external surface. Finally, as is the case with all these primitive old redware pieces, the jar also has a few of the usual defects you would expect in a primitive piece of old pottery such as pops, slubs, uneven surfaces, roughness to the surface, and spots that were it is not completely covered by the glaze. This piece has many additional such defects through it. Most notable is a spot on the handle where the glaze did not completely flow and left an unglazed spot. Be that as it may, this is a very nice antique piece in very good condition worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
