Featuring a lovely white antique ironstone FOOTED COMPOTE made by BROCKMAN POTTERY COMPANY of Cincinnati, Ohio, founded in 1862.
The late 1800s compote has the manufacturer mark on the bottom. The mark includes a depiction of a lion and unicorn with the initials B.P. CO. printed below. Printed above the lion and unicorn are the words “Warranted Best Ironstone China.”
The mark somewhat resembles the British Royal Arms used on pottery in Europe and Britain. Like many 19th century pottery companies in the United States, Brockman purposely used a confusing version of the Royal Arms to mark on their ironstone.
The FOOTED COMPOTE measures approximately 10" in diameter across the top and 6 ⅝” diameter at the base. It stands about 5 ¾” tall. It weighs nearly 3 pounds 14 ounces.
Condition of the compote is very good. I cannot find any cracks however, there is some crazing and browning, which is not unusual for ironstone of this age. I have not cleaned the piece as some collectors enjoy the shabby chic look of the darkened ironstone. However, there are multiple sources online on how to clean antique ironstone.
