This design is based on the F6F-5 Hellcat "White 36" (BuNo 58088) flown by Lt Cecil “Speedball' Harris of VF-18. “Speedball” Harris is remembered for his actions during WWII in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, which earned him the Navy Cross. He ended the war as the navy's second-highest-scoring ace, credited with shooting down 24 Japanese planes. Harris scored 16 of his aerial victories in four different days, downing four enemy aircraft on each of those days. Never during his 88-day tour with VF-18 did a bullet hit his aircraft. It has been said that Harris "was arguably the most consistently exceptional fighter pilot in the US Navy". He was awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star x 2, Distinguished Flying Cross x3 and the Air Medal x3.
