The Great Lakes span for 750 miles from east to west and form the largest fresh water eco system on Earth.  The Great Lakes are made up by Lake Erie, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Superior.  Lake Superior is the largest of the 5 great lakes.  It has 31,700 square miles in surface area.  It is 350 miles wide and 160 miles long with 2,726 miles of shoreline.  Lake Ontario and Erie are the smallest of the 5 Lakes.  They border Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.  They are only 241 miles wide and 57 miles long.  Lake Michigan is the only lake located entirely in the United States.  it is the second largest of the lakes by volume and is connected to Lake Huron by the straits of Mackinac.  There is a scenic tour that will take you 6500 miles around all the lakes.  The great lakes in total contain more than 35,000 islands.
