About the Language
Swahili is a Bantu language widely spoken in Southeast Africa. Although it is the first language of only about 5 million people, it is the lingua franca — a common language between speakers whose native languages are different — used by over 135 million people. Swahili is an official language in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Some of the vocabulary is derived from Arabic through more than twelve centuries of contact with Arabic-speaking inhabitants of the southeastern coast of Africa.
