The Harvard PHD 2000 operates in two modes: PUMP, which runs continuously until the syringe empties, and VOLUME, which runs until a specified amount is pumped. Its advanced micro stepping motor and control software enables ultra-low flow rates, down to 0.0001 µl/hour.

Additionally, the pump operates quietly, ensuring it won’t disturb experimental subjects. The PHD 2000's programming features offer powerful capabilities for complex experiments. In program mode, the pump can perform multiple tasks at specific times or in response to external signals. It can start or stop pumping, adjust flow rates, pump precise volumes, pause, or ramp flow rates up or down.
