Ishida Hirokazu was born in 1943 in Beijing. In 1964 he graduated from the Tokyo Photography College, followed by an apprenticeship with the famous photographer Nagano Shigeichi. The present is his second publication, published by Shashin Hyoronsha under Yoshimura Shinya. The book features photographs taken in the mountain village Akka Motomura in Iwate Prefecture, which Ishida visited over a period of 10 years. Located at the northernmost tip of the Kitakami Mountains, this small settlement was known as “Japan’s Tibet” due to its remoteness and primitive conditions. Ishida’s photographs are anything but a nostalgic documentary but rather an exploration of dark undercurrents in rural Japan. Rare. No copy in OCLC.
