Gem Lore and Info:

Brejinho das Ametistas is a small mining district that produces high quality amethyst crystals. Amethyst is found all over the world, with some of the most precious deposits still found the vicinity of Uruguay, Brazil, Greece, Italy, the Middle East, and the north of Africa. Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz and owes its violet color to irradiation, iron impurities (in some cases in conjunction with transition element impurities), and the presence of trace elements, which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions. The hardness of the mineral is the same as quartz, thus it is suitable for use in jewelry.

In the ranks of crystals with metaphysical properties, few are as famous or as distinctive as amethyst. One of very few stones with its unique purple colouration, amethyst is a form of quartz that contains iron and other trace minerals within its structure. Purple amethyst has represented power through the ages. Carved, polished amethyst stones and gems were used by the Egyptians all the way back in 4000 BC. The rich color of purple amethysts represented royalty perfectly, as far as Egyptians were concerned. This amethyst meaning gave amethyst gems an important place in British crown jewels.

Around 1250 to 1300, Greeks named the purple quartz amethyst meaning "not intoxicated or intoxicating," based on the gem's seeming ability to prevent drunkenness. The name amethyst, and amethyst crystal meaning, is tied to Dionysius, the Greek god of intoxication, who was known as Bacchus to the Romans.
