This is a striking runner for all animal and bird enthusiasts. This piece is an absolute joy to behold, with many quirky stylised goats and peacocks with their fantails. They have used a broad mix of colours from brick red and bottle green to old gold and dark blue, with some terracotta and cream thrown in for good measure.

Afghan Aryana rugs are hand-knotted in Mazar-e-Sharif and Kabul in Afghanistan, often using designs for museum pieces. Woven from long wool sheared from Karakul sheep, the wool is washed using a gentle soap with water and then hand-combed and hand-spun on a spindle. Next, the wool is vegetable dyed using plants, flowers and berries, walnut husks, pomegranate rind, madder root, and indigo. Not surprisingly, wools vary in colour due to differences in the dyes' absorption, resulting in a feature called 'Abrash'- giving Aryana rugs their unique colour and distinct appearance.

The Oriental carpet and rug industry's results have been very positive. It produces high-grade work, such as these Aryana pieces, alongside exciting finds like Mamluk and Samarkand. The traditional weaving industry will continue with details like Kazak, Kunduz, and Balouch. In any event, the highlight is a thriving and more sustainable craft industry.
