An unusual Afghan Loribaft carpet with bold blocks of contrasting colour makes for a traditionally made rug with a great modern twist. There is a real patchwork feel to the decorative style, the blocks of decorated colour being different shapes and sizes. The blocks of colour are a mix of orange, red, dark blue, green, yellow, blue, cream, burgundy and bright red. In addition, there is a wide cream/oatmeal border.
Afghan handmade carpets are becoming very well regarded. This market has grown quickly in recent years, emphasising the higher-quality knotting and Pakistan's influence in many finishing processes, such as initial tensioning to correct alignment issues where the weaver has drifted the wefts, causing the pattern to run out. Next, adjustments are undertaken before surface clipping, herbal washing, and tumbling. This combination of Afghan weaving and finishing in Pakistan has succeeded. These carpets are tightly knotted and usually finished with an unusually bound multicoloured fringe.
The carpets are still hand-knotted, and the wool is coloured with vegetable dye. The Loribaft rug designs can be reminiscent of Gabbeh designs, although the Loribaft pieces are finer and more tightly knotted. The colours of the Loribaft rugs and carpets are similar to those used in our Samarkand collections and possibly more vibrant. The main distinction is that the patterns are playful, using a rich colour palette and simple design, stylised animals, plants, trees or characters with block colour often mimicking an ombre effect. Some Loribaft pieces do not have fringes, finishing with a plain kilim end or binding, which is secured to prevent fraying. Other rugs are produced, like the Samarkand carpets, with an unusual bobbin wind on the warps.
