These beautiful pieces are relatively new, appearing on the market around 2017. These wool rugs and carpets have a certain amount of Caucasian design, similar to Kazak pieces. However, that is where the similarity ends. The rugs mostly have bobbin wound fringes, which are brightly coloured, and they do not have any borders. Instead, the old Caucasian design is mixed into bands or stripes of bright colours. Our Afghan Samarkand rugs are handmade using naturally dyed wool on a cotton foundation. The wool used is taken from the native Karakul sheep. It is very tough and has a high natural oil content.
The final carpet stage in Pakistan involves many processes. Initial tensioning and correcting weft alignments and errors may be undertaken, followed by surface clipping, herbal washing, and tumbling. This combination of Afghan weaving and finishing in Pakistan has been a great success. These carpets are closely knotted and usually finished with an exciting and unusual bound multicoloured fringe.
Hand-knotted Afghan Samarkand rugs and carpets are a relatively new production for us. We always look for something different or unusual that ticks that box. These rugs make a striking statement with their beautiful colours and the mixture of traditional and modern design. Samarkand rugs have been made recently in northwest Afghanistan, and the name has been given to their unique design. In Uzbekistan, Samarkand is famous along with Bukhara for being on the silk road linking China with the West. We hope you also like this fascinating, colourful carpet as much as we do.
