About the Wine

First planted in 1877 by Doña Antonia Ferriera, the vineyards have all been replanted to the traditional varietals of Portugal’s Douro DOC, beginning in the 1980s. In 2011 Winemaker Francisco Olazabal, 4X Great Grandson of Doña Antonia, was honored as Portugal’s ‘Winemaker of the Year.' A marriage of tradition and technology, the estate boasts temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation, yet all of the fruit is still trodden by foot, for 4 hours in ancient stone troughs called Lagares.

This wine derives from a rigorous selection of grapes produced in the oldest vineyards of the Quinta: Vale Grande, Cabeço das Pulgas, Casa das Máquinas, Três encostas, and Poente da Viola. Each grape variety is harvested and vinified separately. After being crushed and de-stemmed into granite ‘Lagares’ they are trodden by foot.

Aging: French Allier oak barriques (225 liters). 65% new and 35% second usage.

Blend: Touriga Nacional 45%, Touriga Franca 45%, Tinta Barroca 5% and Tinta Roriz 5%

Tasting notes: Red Wine. Very concentrated in color. Deep and complex nose with lots of aromatic nuances, yet maintaining the balance between them. In the mouth it is vibrant, in a set of great elegance, showing an excellent integration of the wood, a surprisingly large variety of flavors, and a very long aftertaste.

Reviews

This Quinta was created by the legendary Dona Antonia Ferreira in the 19th century and it is still owned by her descendants. While currently quite youthful, there is greatness in this wine. Its density of minerality, black fruits, and rich tannins create a wine with huge aging potential. It's rich while always elegant, balanced, and ready for a long life.
