About the Wine

Priced below $75, this Domaine du Clos des Poulettes Nuits-Saint-Georges delivers the power and elegance usually reserved for $200–$500 NSG legends like Robert Chevillon, Henri Gouges, and André Goichot. At Big Hammer Wines, this rare find lets you enjoy elite Burgundy quality without the elite price — a savvy choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Born in the heart of the prestigious Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, where wines are often referred to as the "Fine Wines of the Côte de Nuits." Domaine du Clos des Poulettes wines are sourced from several villages in the Cotes de Nuits.

Nuits-Saint-Georges has no vineyards designated with the prestigious "Grand Cru" title but that doesn't take away from the village's long-standing reputation for producing some of Burgundy's most powerful reds. NSG, as it's called in sommelier circles, is home to 41 Premier Cru vineyards. This prestigious appellation is one of Burgundy's finest, producing wines with impressive structure and exceptional age ability. The wines from Nuits-Saint-Georges will impress you with their muscular structure, power, velvety tannins, and substantial age-ability NSG is so famous for. These wines have both body and spirit and are some of Burgundy's most long-lived.

The Domaine de la Poulette boasts a rich history dating back to the time of Louis XIV. It has been passed down through six generations, with each generation's dedication to wine being unwavering. From the Renvey family to Joannet in Arcenant, Grivot in Vosne Romanée, and Charles Maitrot, a notable figure in the world of agriculture – they all played a role in shaping the Domaine's legacy.

Hélène Michaut has been at the helm of the Domaine since 2015. With her engineering background and expertise in e-commerce, she's brought innovation to the wine industry. Her dedication to winemaking led her to acquire a new cellar in 2015, bringing modern winemaking techniques to the heart of tradition.

Lucien Audidier was a remarkable figure who significantly impacted the Burgundy vineyard. From a modest background, he rose to become an authority in Burgundy wine, serving in various prestigious roles. His marriage to a woman from a wine-producing family led him to the Domaine de la Poulette, where he revitalized its legacy.

2022 is looking to be a great year in Burgundy. Decanter said, "Despite the (very) hot and dry season, 2022 wasn’t a typical année solaire, according to the verdicts of Burgundy’s winemakers, with quality and quantity to be found, many early-drinking options, but reds to lay down, too. Overall quality is very high for red wines. There is more concentration in 2022… even if you try to make wine for the future, they are showing quite well right now."

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels.

Critical Reviews

Effusive nose of forest berries, wet earth, licorice and bark. Even more dark fruit on the medium- to full-bodied palate. A healthy core of fine tannins and crisp acidity that's wrapped in ripe fruit. Quite some spice and vanilla in the long finish, where there's also some bitter chocolate character. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. ~93 James Suckling
