Artist Statement
Jeff Wallace is a multi-media artist whose work examines the palimpsest of time and memory through compositions and installations that rely on the use of repur- posed materials, ephemera, and books.
Trained in a broad range of disciplines (painting, printmaking, graphic design), Wallace favors a cumulative approach to composition, combining disparate sourc- es and techniques to arrive at new forms and narratives. As with memory itself, the resulting works function as both allusion and invention, their layers and invented structures embodying the gradual process by which reflection shifts to interpretation.
“My paintings and installations are constructions that amplify the relationship between time and memory. I use materials that may be familiar to a viewer, but are not immediately recognizable out of context – often starting with discarded books. With this medium, I am interested in preserving the ‘what was’ and in elevating the ‘as is’ to represent what remains present in memory with the passing of time – the colors, light, shapes and patterns of what is encountered in daily life.”
Wallace attended the prestigious Yale Design Program in Brissago, CH and Purchase College (NY) earning a BFA in Visual Arts (1985).
Exhibitions include: Day Marks, curated by Tess DePaula and Rysia Murphy; PAPER at Cristine Tierney Gallery, NY; Circles and Squares at Rick Wester Fine Art, NY; RED at Site:Brooklyn; Infinite Rhizome at Lichtundfire Gallery, NY; and Processed Prose at Swenson Gallery, Miami, FL. Wallace’s work is in a number of private collections throughout the United States and abroad.
Wallace was a 2022 Fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA);
a 2020 resident of the Visiting Artist / Visiting Scholar program at the American Academy in Rome; a 2019 Fellow at the Vermont Studio Center; and an October 2018 Fellow at Yaddo. In addition to his studio practice, he is curator of Main Window Dumbo, an art presentation space for emerging New York artists.
Wallace lives and works in Brooklyn.
