Presented is a Limited Edition, Binder’s Copy of The Captain: George C. Thomas Jr. and His Golf Architecture by Geoff Shackelford. This is the definitive biography of George C. Thomas, one of the most significant figures in the history of golf course architecture. This special printing was published by Sleeping Bear Press in 1996 and is beautifully bound by Felton Bookbinding Ltd. It is bound in full green leather boards with gilt ruling on the front and back boards, gilt titles to the front board, raised bands, gilt titles and gilt stamps to the spine, new marbled endpapers bordered with lacy gilt dentelle work, and a matching green cloth slipcase.
The Captain: George C. Thomas Jr. and His Golf Architecture is the first in-depth look at the life and architectural philosophy of this interesting and talented man. Following World War I, George Thomas began dabbling in course design on the East Coast. In 1920, he moved to California. There, he designed several of the most important and visually pleasing golf courses in the country, including Riviera Country Club, Los Angeles Country Club, and Bel-Air Country Club. Shackelford’s text also devotes several pages to Thomas’ associate William Bell and their work together in California. This is a great book for historians and golf design geeks.
A former college golfer from Pepperdine, Geoff Shackelford is the author of 11 books and a contributor to all of golf's major publications and host of the newsletter, The Quadrilateral. His course design credits include collaborations with Gil Hanse on Rustic Canyon and the renovation of Los Angeles Country Club's South and North Courses, the latter being the host of 2023's U.S. Open.
