Designed to be a higher capacity R-12 type refrigerant, R-500 found some use in air conditioning and dehumidifier equipment and in positive pressure centrifugal chillers.

Since the CFC phaseout in 1995, limited quantities of R-500 are still available for service.

R-500 can be retrofitted to R-401A, R-401B, R-409A, R-417C, and R-450A.

Production of the R-500 refrigerant halted on January 1, 2006 because of its environmentally harmful chemical makeup.
