For the production of the scarves I focused on 3 things: Reducing the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process, eliminating single-use plastics from production and donating a percentage of every sale to charities that work protecting the environment.

• To reduce as much as possible the carbon footprint of manufacturing, we chose to work with a local companies. As with most manufacturing business in Hong Kong, their factories are in Shenzhen so samples and products could be send quickly by land and without involving planes in the process. 

• To eliminate the use of single use plastic that are customary in manufacturing, we negotiated with my suppliers to wrap every silk scarf and presentation box in tissue paper, and then to send everything in big cardboard boxes. Usually products come from the factory individually wrapped in poly bags and then wrapped in bubble wrap. We reduced unnecessary plastic by 99%

• We were mindful of minimising the impact of our products on the environment as much as possible, to support local business and to give back to nature. We donate 10% of the price to nature focused charities.

About the brand:

Gina Maldonado is an illustrator, artist and designer based in Hong Kong. Her work is colourful and joyful, inspired by her love of nature, Latin American heritage and experiences of living in Europe and Asia. She has a keen eye for detail and spends many hours creating imaginary scenes that celebrate the natural world and the many creatures that inhabit it. She's passionate about wildlife and nature conservation and with her work she aims to support animal sanctuaries that work to protect wildlife and natural habitats. She studied architecture and interior design – in Colombia, Mexico and Italy.
