The Radial winch drum's gripping surface is shaped for each winch size and drum material and features diagonal ribs (rather than textured abrasive materials) to maximize gripping power and greatly reduce line wear. The self-tailing mechanism on the winch means that one crew member can quickly and easily trim or raise sails.

High-strength composite roller bearings and bushings reduce friction under load. Load-carrying gears and pins are 17-4 PH stainless steel for strength, corrosion resistance.

Motors attach to central drive shaft and drive through winch gears for two-speed mechanical advantage. Low-power first gear for fast trimming; higher-power second gear for fine-tuning loaded sheets.
