Highlighting the Hole with Martina Cox
This class is part of the six-part virtual Mending Series II. Classes may be purchased à la carte at $75 or as a six-part package for a discounted price of $400.
The detailed hand stitching of mending scars naturally reflects the intimate relationship and innate sustainability humans once had with their clothes. In this class, we’ll celebrate that relationship and highlight everything that is fun, wonky, and beautiful about the act of mending. You’ll learn how to create colorful, contrasting frames around holes in knit garments and incorporate embroidery techniques into patching.
In the final portion of the class, we’ll combine these skills into a colorful composition unique to your own style- bridging the worlds of mending and art. The photos here are meant to inspire, offering a glimpse into the essence of what this class is all about!
Date + Time
Friday, September 26th, 2025, 12 - 2:30 pm ET
Location
Zoom, a link will be emailed to participants the day before class.
Cost
$75 for the individual class
$400 for the series
Materials
- Embroidery thread in 2-3 contrasting colors
- Needles of different weights and thickness
- Scrap fabric
Please bring an item, preferably a knit or something with stretch, with a hole that is .5-1.5 inch in diameter (think moth hole or bigger)- the more holes in one area the better! Use your judgement on the item that needs mending! A tshirt that is fraying getting weak in some spots, a knit sweater that some moths have snacked on, a hoodie with a tear in it, make sure it is something you are excited to embellish and decorate through your mend!
Things that I would not recommend for this class: Jeans that have a big rip in the crotch, an item you are looking to alter (bring in, take out, etc..)
Optional:
- Yarn of different colors and thickness- a personal fave for decorative mending!
- Chalk/erasable fabric marker
- Beads
- Needle Threader

Our Teacher
Martina Cox is an artist based in New York City. After graduating from The Cooper Union in 2018, she founded her eponymous clothing label, creating one-of-a-kind, made-to-order garments as a way to uphold slow fashion values. Since closing her business in 2022, Martina has continued exploring themes of fashion history and craft through sculpture, drawing, and performance.
She began co-hosting a monthly mending club, called 'Darn it!' as a way to examine methodologies for slowing down consumption and to create spaces where we can begin to heal our relationships with the objects we often deem disposable.
*All classes in this series will be recorded. A link to the recording will be emailed to all students following the live session. You may purchase the series as a whole even after the classes have begun. You will be emailed the recordings upon sign-up.
