The Sumner Pecan tree is a great choice if you are looking for a strong tree to provide high yields of delicious, homegrown pecans!

These fruit trees were discovered in Tifton, Ga in 1932 by Walter Sumner. They have been gracing the southern United States with their high-quality paper shell nuts that are easy to crack open and enjoy immediately or to make pecan pie!

The Sumner trees produce large-sized nuts that yield around 52 nuts per pound with 52% kernel and wonderful taste. The thin shells are known as papershell pecan tree cultivars. The tree will bear nuts after 3-5 years.

This is a Type-2 pollinator and requires a Type-1 like Cape Fear Pecan or Creek Pecan to cross-pollinate and produce nuts. Sumner pecan tree pollination is done by the wind.

How to Care for Pecan Trees Bought Online

Sumner trees prefer full sun and have a fall harvest date. Its mature pecan nuts ripen in early October to late October.

Grow this pecan variety in USDA hardiness zones 6-9. A slow-release fertilizer at the top of the root ball near the tree trunk during planting will help with root development during the first year of tree planting.

It will grow up to 50-70 feet tall and 40-60 feet wide as a mature tree and has an extremely fast growth rate. The Sumner features an upright habitat and prefers deep, moist, well-drained soil. Perform a soil test to check soil pH and to see what else is missing in your garden soil.

Regular watering is a necessity during its first growing season to establish a strong root system, as well as minimal pruning done in the winter to encourage spring growth. Young pecan trees will need extensive watering to maintain their large root systems once the tree starts growing.

This Carya illinoinensis pecan cultivar is pecan scab and disease resistant and is a great choice for backyard planting or for growing great shade trees.

Please note, we do not ship bare-root trees. They are rooted in a container with soil and have established tap roots.
